Local Engineers For Penicuik And EH26
We cover Penicuik and the surrounding Midlothian villages, from the old town centre around the High Street out to Cornbank, Mauricewood, Eastfield and the newer developments at Greenlaw Mains, and on to Auchendinny, Roslin and the properties out toward the Pentlands.
It is a mixed town to work in. A stone terrace off the High Street and a five-year-old house at Greenlaw Mains need completely different answers, so we survey properly and quote on what is actually there.
The High Street, Cornbank, Mauricewood And The New Builds
Penicuik grew as a paper-mill town, and the older terraces and stone properties around the High Street still reflect that. They are solid-walled, so heat loss is higher than a modern house and the heating design has to be done on real measurements rather than a rule of thumb.
The bigger estates at Cornbank, Mauricewood, Eastfield and Deanburn are mostly post-war and later, with cavity walls and gardens. These are some of the most straightforward properties we work on: room for a heat pump outside, space for a cylinder, and a driveway for an EV charger.
The newer developments at Greenlaw Mains and around the edges of the town are well insulated from the outset and often came with a heat pump already fitted. There we are more often called for servicing, controls that were never set up properly, solar and battery retrofits and EV chargers than for a full heating replacement.
Out toward Auchendinny, Roslin and the Pentland villages a lot of properties are off the gas grid on oil, LPG or electric storage heating. Those are among the strongest cases for a heat pump anywhere we work, because the fuel being replaced is expensive.
What We Are Called Out For In Penicuik
-
Oil and LPG replacement with heat pumps
Off-grid properties see the biggest running-cost improvement, and qualify for the same funding.
-
Storage heating replacement
Old electric storage systems are expensive to run and are a strong case for a heat pump or a modern alternative.
-
Servicing heat pumps on the newer estates
Systems fitted by the developer at Greenlaw Mains and similar, often needing their controls set up properly for the first time.
-
Servicing and annual maintenance
Including systems installed by others, across Penicuik and the surrounding villages.

Penicuik Questions
Do heat pumps actually cope with a Scottish winter?
Yes. Modern air source heat pumps are designed to run well below freezing and are used across Scandinavia. What matters far more than the weather is whether the system was sized honestly and commissioned properly, which is the part we take time over.
I am off the gas grid on oil. Is a heat pump worth it?
Usually it is one of the strongest cases there is. Oil and LPG are expensive per unit of heat, so the running-cost gap is wide, and the Home Energy Scotland grant and interest-free loan apply the same as anywhere else in Scotland.
Do you cover Auchendinny, Roslin and the villages as well?
Yes. We cover EH26 and the surrounding Midlothian villages. Give us the postcode when you enquire and we will confirm before we book anything in.
